Preditors and Editors by Jan Marie

Preditors and Editors is a must have site for all writers out there. Especially if you are looking for an Editor,  Literary Agents, or Book Publishers. I have used this site myself when I was considering such myself. It saved me from some nasty pitfalls. The site is a sort of a safety guide to you guessed it Editors, Literary Agents and publishers out there, plus a whole lot more. I kind of like to call them the Better Business Bureau for writers.
For example you are looking for a Literary Agent. Perhaps you even have one in mind to check out. On Preditors and Editors you can look up the agency to find out background on the as well as to see if they are legit or not. They do not limit just there as you can even check out attorneys, screen writing publishers, gaming publishers and so on.
If you do not see the agency on their list you can easily contact them too.
You mostly want to be aware of two types of publishers Vanity Presses and Subsidiary Publishers.
Vanity Presses- They are publishing companies that publish a book at the author’s expense.  The term vanity comes from that these companies appealing to the writer’s vanity to be published. They get their profit form the author’s payment not the sales of the book like traditional publishers. Their prices can be costly and even enforce a binding contract that you may or may not regret later. For example say a publishing company will read your manuscript no charge, Next you then get a reply they like your book and offer you a book contract. Of course you think this is great, when you are hit with the sucker punch that you have to get your own editor, pay for a copy of your own book along with any other book you may want to give or sell. Another thing also have to be your own PR agent in promoting your book. If you know nothing on self promoting you are kind of left out in the cold.
Subsidiary Publishers- They are pretty much the same as Vanity Presses.  They take money from the author to publish their book. The difference is they do offer small editing and promotional services of course all for an extra fee that is incorporated into the whole publishing  price. They are also known to take a percentage of rights over the book as well. A perfect example is Dorrance Publishing. They flat out say they are a subsidiary publishing company.
Final Note
It’s important to check out before hand who you are going to submit your long hard work too. You manuscript is you baby and you do not want to just hand it over to anyone. Not only can it keep you safe it can also help in getting accepted.
